Look at the picture 👀
You can see people working in different professions.
But here’s a bigger challenge:
How many jobs can you name in Spanish?
You probably already know a few simple words like doctor, teacher, or driver.
But Spanish has hundreds of useful words for talking about people’s jobs and careers.
And if you’re learning Spanish in the United States, this vocabulary can be especially useful.
You may hear these words at work, in your neighborhood, at a doctor’s office, at school, or when talking about someone’s career.
So let’s turn this picture into a Jobs & Professions Spanish Vocabulary Challenge.
Don’t worry if you don’t know the answers.
Try to guess first, then learn the word.
🧠 QUIZ #1 — Who Takes Care of Sick Patients?
Imagine you’re at a hospital.
You meet someone whose job is to care for patients, check their condition, and help with their treatment.
What is this profession called in Spanish?
A. Enfermero / Enfermera
B. Abogado / Abogada
C. Contador / Contadora
D. Electricista
✅ Answer: Enfermero / Enfermera
🇪🇸 Enfermero = male nurse
🇪🇸 Enfermera = female nurse
This is an especially useful word if you’re talking about healthcare.
You’ll notice that many Spanish professions have masculine and feminine forms.
For example:
- enfermero — male nurse
- enfermera — female nurse
Learning both forms can help you understand Spanish conversations more easily.
👩🏫 QUIZ #2 — Who Works in a Classroom?
Here’s another one.
This person helps students learn subjects such as math, science, history, or languages.

Pronunciation: approximately my-ESS-troh / my-ESS-trah
🇪🇸 Maestro = male teacher
You may also hear profesor / profesora, especially for teachers and professors in various educational settings.
💡 Vocabulary tip:
Don’t assume that one English word always has exactly one Spanish translation.
“Teacher” can be expressed with different terms depending on the country, educational level, and context.
That’s normal when learning a language.

✅ Answer: Bombero / Bombera
🇪🇸 Bombera = female firefighter
Pronunciation: approximately bom-BEH-ro / bom-BEH-rah
🇪🇸 Bombero = male firefighter
This is a great example of a profession where the Spanish word may not look anything like the English word.
So don’t rely only on cognates.
Sometimes you simply have to build the connection:
🔥 Firefighter → bombero
A picture can help make that connection memorable.
🔧 QUIZ #5 — Who Fixes Cars?

You take it to someone who specializes in repairing vehicles.

✅ Answer: Mecánico / Mecánica
Mecánica = female mechanic

This one is fairly easy for English speakers because mecánico is related to the English word “mechanic.”
These similarities are called cognates.
Finding cognates is one of the easiest ways to grow your Spanish vocabulary faster.
🏠 QUIZ #6 — Who Installs and Repairs Pipes?
Imagine a leaking sink, broken pipe, or plumbing problem.

✅ Answer: Fontanero / Fontanera
🇪🇸 Fontanera = female plumber
Spanish isn’t exactly the same everywhere.

This is an important lesson for Spanish learners:
Vocabulary can vary between Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and Spanish-speaking communities in the United States.
Don’t let regional differences discourage you.
Start with one common term, then gradually learn alternatives as you encounter them.

Here’s an easy one.
You have a toothache.

A. Dentista
B. Electricista
C. Arquitecto / Arquitecta
D. Periodista
✅ Answer: Dentista
Pronunciation: approximately den-TEES-tah
🇪🇸 Dentista = dentist
Notice something interesting:
Dentista can be used for both a male and female dentist.
Not every Spanish profession changes its ending according to gender.
That’s why it’s useful to learn the actual word rather than assuming every profession follows exactly the same pattern.
⚡ QUIZ #10 — Who Works With Electrical Systems?
There’s a power problem in your house.
Who might you call?
A. Electricista
B. Maestro / Maestra
C. Abogado / Abogada

Some professions:

Other professions:
electricista
🇪🇸 Electricista = electrician
Again, this profession uses the same noun form for both men and women.
That’s a useful pattern to notice:
-o / -a
Examples:
mecánico / mecánica
The noun stays the same.
Examples:
dentista
The surrounding article or adjective can indicate gender when needed.
👷 BONUS VOCABULARY: Jobs You May Hear in Everyday Life
Let’s add a few more useful professions to your Spanish vocabulary.
🇪🇸 Carpintero / Carpintera — Carpenter

🇪🇸 Vendedor / Vendedora — Salesperson
🇪🇸 Gerente — Manager
🇪🇸 Recepcionista — Receptionist
🇪🇸 Asistente — Assistant
🧠 Can You Spot the Pattern?
Look at these pairs:
Abogado → Abogada
Mecánico → Mecánica
Bombero → Bombera
Carpintero → Carpintera
Fotógrafo → Fotógrafa
You can often see a pattern where -o changes to -a for feminine forms.
But then look at:
Dentista
Electricista
Periodista
Gerente
These don’t follow the same pattern.
That’s why it’s better to learn Spanish vocabulary through real examples and repeated exposure instead of trying to force every word into one grammar rule.

Why Learn Job Vocabulary in Spanish?
If you live, work, or interact with Spanish-speaking communities in the United States, professions are a practical vocabulary category to learn.
You can use job words when talking about:
💼 What someone does for work
🏥 Healthcare appointments
🏫 Schools and education
🏠 Home repairs
🚗 Car problems
⚖️ Legal services
💰 Business and finances
💻 Technology careers
🍽️ Restaurants and hospitality
🚒 Emergency services
And once you know the profession words, you can start combining them with other Spanish vocabulary.
For example, you can eventually learn how to say:
“She is a teacher.”
“He is a mechanic.”
“My brother is a nurse.”
“I need a plumber.”
“The dentist is here.”
That’s when vocabulary starts becoming more than a list of translations.
It becomes something you can actually use in conversation.
Note: “The answer to the above picture is a soldier.”
